It's getting to that time of year again, and slipjig and I are both in need of a loan of laptops. Readers take note: we are willing to put down a deposit on said laptops: $50 apiece, with $25 for each laptop upon return.

13:03 pm - Brideshead Revisited?
|
I just now saw the trailer for the latest adaptation of Brideshead Revisited.
And even though Lady Marchmain is being played by the incomparable Emma Thompson, I have the feeling I might not care for this adaptation. I'm trying to keep an open mind. Oh, well. At least I own the miniseries, which stays very close to the novel. Here's hoping they leave Aloysius in.

So I tried watching Freaks & Geeks.
I was really prepared to like this show. Critical acclaim, lots of recommendations from friends, all that jazz.
Unfortunately, I didn't care for it. See, it just reminded me too much of one thing:
I. Hated. High School.
This depressed me. I was a bully magnet in those days. At times I tried to be perfect, but eventually I gave up. Being "perfect" meant not being true to myself, and eventually I decided to be true to myself and be different. I was a freak. So what if I didn't go out with boys? So what if I spent my time at lunch reading in the library?
Oh, well. Next up on my newly revised Netflix queue is Billy Connolly. That should do the trick.

When I was growing up, I did Christmas with my father's relatives. These days, it's a lot more bare-bones. Tonight we'll probably wrap all the gifts for the kids. I've already had my dinner - a Hot Pocket - and am impatiently waiting the not-quite three hours for slipjig to come home. Oh, and listening to that song by the Pogues. You know the one. Also hoping the Naproxen will kick in, as my arthritis is acting up and I want to cut off my left arm at the shoulder.
Merry Christmas, to everyone celebrating.

Dear Mom,
1. If you're really concerned about my health, be concerned about my emotional health. My mental illness is a far more likely illness to kill me before my time, for any number of reasons.
2. My body weight is none of your business. You're only angry because I actually stood up to you and told you that.
No love,
Me

18:51 pm - Retail therapy - sort of
|
Going to the supermarket does make me feel better. So when slipjig got a half day from work, off we went to stock up supplies. It was meant to be a small trip, but wound up costing us...well...a lot. I mean at least we're well stocked up in case the zombies invade, though.
I found it strangely therapeutic, though. Not that spending money is in and of itself therapeutic, but there's a kind of optimism in a store run - coming back loaded down with milk, butter, eggs, a marble loaf cake, tomato sauce, peanut butter, stuff like that. It speaks to some sort of culinary creative spark. Or else I was just hungry when I went shopping.
Probably I was just hungry. But who knows?

20:32 pm - Dear Sunny and Lucy:
|
1. Running over to your dishes when I get up to feed you? Not such a great thing if you trip me.
2. Knocking your water dish around, thus spilling a lot of water on the floor? Not good.
3. Attaching your claws to my jeans to let me know it's dinner time? Also not good.
Please to be correcting these things, kthnx.
Love,
Your Devoted Mom

....But I wasn't. I was idly going through Best Of Craigslist when I noted this little entry.
Then I noticed it was from Albany. Right in my old stomping grounds.
*sigh* I'd thought that this kind of stuff was the sort of thing that could only happen...elsewhere.
Apparently not.
